ERB Testing - ERB App issues
This article is to provide solutions for ERB testing via Chromebooks. Encountered the following issues when students were testing during Fall 2025 ERB testing. Recommendations were provided by ERB Support
- ERB crashing and Locking
- Delayed response to students (ie. Took 5-10 seconds for the next question to appear on screen
1. CTP App Crashing and Locking on Screen
The behavior where the app closes unexpectedly and then becomes unresponsive may be related to how Android apps interact with ChromeOS when they are not running in kiosk mode. Since the ERB CTP app relies on a browser-based rendering engine (such as Android System WebView or Chrome Custom Tabs), unexpected closures can sometimes leave background processes in an unstable or "locked" state, especially if system resources are constrained or if the app was closed mid-process.
Restarting the Chromebook clears the temporary memory and resets those services, which is why it typically resolves the issue.
2. Slowness When Not Closing the App or Restarting the Chromebook
The delayed loading behavior (5–10 seconds before the next question appears) can occur under certain conditions — particularly if:
The Chromebook lid is closed without first fully exiting the ERB app.
The device enters sleep mode while the app is still running.
The Chromebook is not restarted between sessions.
Because the ERB app uses live internet connectivity and a browser -based rendering engine to deliver content, leaving it running in the background or resuming from sleep can impact how efficiently the app reinitializes or resumes its session. Cached session data, interrupted background services, or re-establishing secure connections can all contribute to slower performance.
Recommendations Moving Forward
To help minimize these issues in future testing sessions, we recommend the following best practices:
Close the ERB app completely after each test section before closing the Chromebook lid or logging out.
Restart Chromebooks daily before testing begins to ensure a fresh system environment.
Clear the browser cache on all student Chromebooks before testing.
*Note: In the event that the CTP application becomes unresponsive, you may try using the following command to force quit the application*
Exit the app by:
- [Shift + Search + Esc] or [Search + Shift + Q] to unpin the app, then the X to close the app will appear.
- The back button on the session login page should take you to the splash page of the app, but you will still need to use Shift + Search + Esc to unpin the app. Then you can press the 'X' or minimize button to exit the app.
